FAQ
Here are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions:
What types of Midwives are there in Oregon?
Traditional Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives, Licensed Direct Entry Midwives and Certified Nurse Midwives.
Each of these types of Midwives bring their own special brand to serve families. All of them are able to attend out of hospital births. Only Certified Nurse Midwives also serve in hospitals, with hospital privledges.
Will my baby get a Birth Certificate?
Yes. Nova Vida Midwives LLC, have the ability to register your baby's birth with Oregon. We fill out all of the required paperwork and submit it to the Oregon Health Authority. A social security number is also assigned to your baby during this process.
Where are my prenatal appointments held?
The Midwives of NovaVida will see you at your home for your prenatal visits. We also have availability to meet at Cynthia's home if it is more convenient for you. Having your visits at your home allows us to get to know you in the comfort of your own surroundings. We are able to become familiar with your older children and pets. This helps us when we arrive for the labor and birth. We love the personal touch that home visits provide.
Does insurance and OHP cover the costs of home birth?
Yes, most insurance companies do cover home birth fees. We work with a billing company that will send in Verification of Benefits for you and does the billing for you. OHP does pay for the midwife fee and we will submit the proper paperwork required by OHP, (to be sure that they will pay), prior to your birth.
Do I have to take the baby to the hospital or a doctor after it is born?
It is recommended that you take your baby to a well child visit after we have completed our 6 weeks of care for you and your baby. If there are any abnormalities or health concerns for your child, we strongly encourage you to have the baby seen before the 6 weeks are completed. The baby does not need to be seen by a doctor at the time of birth unless there are complications. Midwives are trained in normal newborn care and can provide all of the routine examintations and observations required after birth. We also perform the Newborn Screening test (the bloodspot test) and test for Critical Congenital Heart Disease using a Pulse Oximeter. Newborn Vitamin K and Eye Ointment are also given, unless the parents sign a waiver to refuse administration of either or both.
Do I have to go to a doctor or to the lab to have my bloodwork done during my pregnancy?
The midwives of Nova Vida will draw your blood for all of the lab work needed during your pregnancy. Cynthia has a lab account with the local hospital where she submits requests for the routine labs, and is able to customize your testing (unless you have OHP and there are mandatory tests to be done). All prenatal care can be provided by your midwives. If complications or high risk situations arise during your pregnancy, referral to a doctor may become necessary. These are handled on an individual, case by case basis.
Is home birth messy?
We make sure that we clean up everything after your birth. You will not have to lift a finger...and no, it isn't too messy. We have had a lot of experience in knowing where to put the chux pads and how to avoid big messes from birth fluids. We will start a load of laundry and have you tucked into your fresh clean bed before we leave.
What if there is an emergency during my birth?
As a licensed midwife in Oregon, Cynthia carries medications to stop bleeding, IV's and oxygen. She and Tawnie are both trained in CPR and Advanced Life Support. They are also trained in Neonatal Resusitation. If transport to the hospital is required, EMS will be called.
What if I tear?
Licensed midwives can legally carry local anesthetics and suturing matierials and equipment. Cynthia is capable of repairing 1st and 2nd degree lacerations. Tears deeper than that require transfer for suturing in hospital. (by rule)
Will I be seen after the birth?
